CANSCAIP October MeetingWed. Oct. 12, 7:00 pm
SPEAKER: Joel Sutherland - Non-Fiction is Non-Boring!
Children love smart, funny, and engaging non-fiction books. Publishers are looking for fact-based books on every subject under the sun (including books about the sun). So why don't more aspiring children's authors use non-fiction as a way to break the ice and get their foot in the publishing door (by writing books about ice, feet, and/or doors, for example)? Joel will share his path to publication and how he has balanced writing non-fiction and fiction along the way to becoming "the ghost guy" of Canada. Joel A. Sutherland is the author of Be a Writing Superstar and Haunted Canada volumes 4 to 6 (all from Scholastic Canada). His Haunted Canada books have won Silver Birch and Hackmatack Awards. In 2017, Scholastic will publish his YA novel Summer's End, the first two books in a middle grade series Screamers, and Haunted Canada 7. Joel is the Children's & Youth Services Librarian for the Georgina Public Library.
